England 2 - Wales 0

Saturday was our only full day in Singapore city, so we spent most of it relaxing. We did however do the tacky tourist thing and had cocktails in the Long Bar, I naturally had a Singapore Sling but Heather had something else. The Long Bar is very pleasant, and it is possible to visualise Noel Coward et al sipping their gins, vodkas, etc in it. It felt strange chucking peanut shells on the floor though.

In the evening, it was the England World Cup qualifier against Wales, so we headed to the Penny Black for some more Old Speckled Hen and to watch the match. After the match had finished, they advertised the England - Azerbaijan match for the Wednesday. A major dilemma as we would be on the cruise that day... I tried to negotiate with Heather about cancelling the cruise so we could watch it, but she does have her limits.

After the match we decided to do a bit of a wander around Singapore, and we ended up in City Space which is a bar on the 70th storey of the Swissotel tower in Singapore. Gorgeous views from the huge windows, as can be imagined and again we quaffed a couple more cocktails each.

It was during this evening, that my camera of 4 years died, so we were unable to have any pictures from Singapore.

Plane Ride from Heaven

As we were by this point officially honeymooners, we managed to scam emergency exit seats. Swiss Air are now my recommended airline to travel with. (Handing out Swiss chocs during the flight doesn't hurt their reputation either :). Anyway, for just about the first time ever, I managed to sleep on a plane. Did I feel guilty about the 6' 4" bloke sitting in a cramped seat? Did I heck! Retrospectively, it was a pity I slept as Swiss Air have 35 channels (or so) to surf through in economy.

On arrival at Singapore, we were driven to our hotel: the Raffles The Plaza, which overlooks the Raffles hotel (still 5 stars though :P). After an afternoon nap, we decided to head to Boat Quay for dinner. At night, the quay is alive with restaurants offering all culinary fare from European to Asian & Indian; having just had two weeks of Greek food, we decided to eat Asian and more specifically Chinese. So we picked one by the water, and enjoyed a pleasant meal.

After that, it was off to the compulsory Irish theme pub that every city has. In this case it was called Molly Malones, and the beer there was almost as expensive as the meal we had! Naturally, we only stayed for one at those kinds of prices, but decided to find another way back to the hotel (did I mention we were staying at Raffles?). Much to my delight I found an English theme pub called the Penny Black further down Boat Quay, and dragged Heather in to check it out. Much to my delight, they served Old Speckled Hen on tap. Normally, I am wary of tapped ales travelling so far (Guinness tastes terrible outside of Ireland) but I took the plunge, and tried it. After several years of crappy lagers (sorry, Australia but your beers are awful) it was really nice to have a decent pint.

While we were chatting in the pub, I noticed a sign advertising the England-Wales World Cup qualifier being screened live in the pub the following night. Much to my delight Heather agreed to watch the game with me in the pub! See, this is one of the many reasons why I have a wonderful wife...
